Couldn't get it booked in before this Saturday and we're off to t'Egypt on Sunday for a week so it's booked in for the day we get back - 4th April. Bit closer to the date of the trial than I'd have liked but still got a bit of 'float' just in case.

Cheers

MOT

Postby varleym » Mon Apr 04, 2011 9:26 am

Got back from t'Egypt at about 3:30 this morning and had Kermit down at the local MOT garage for 8:00. Pacing up and down like an expectant father now waiting for news !!!!!

On the run down to the garage I've (unfortunately) confirmed that the rear diff is shot - it's fine under load but as soon as you ease off the gas it whines and grates like a, errr, well windey gratey thing :(

Anyway, following a quick conversation with the proprietor of MKS Classics, got a decent secondhand one sorted via Tony at Four Plus Four although it's still in the donor vehicle but I should have it in a couple of days. I'll get the old one out in the meantime so re-fitting shouldn't take too long.

MOT willing, we're still looking good for Sunday. Fingers crossed !!

Cheers

Mark

MOT

Postby varleym » Mon Apr 04, 2011 12:33 pm

:( :( :( :( :(

Not good, few bits of stuff to fix:

Warning lights for fog lamp and hazard lights;
Problem with the headlights, might be bulbs in upside down;
Bonnet retaining device ineffective (well it would be 'cos I took it off - didn't know you needed it with the bonnet pins);
Main problem is the front tyres rubbing on the radius arms on full lock, especially as the steering stops have been ground off (not just removed). I'll just have to tack a big nut or something on to the hub for now to stop the Tyre rubbing and sort out a proper fix later.

You used the wrong MOT man didn't you !!!, warning lights yes, headlights yes bonnet retaining catch well I haven't got one and I don't think it's a fail as long as the bonnet is secure (pins are fine), tyres rubbing yes but if your MOT man knows you and what your going to use it for he could ignore the fact .

Matthew

I guess you could be right. I'll get it sorted temporarily by tacking a nut/small block on to the hub just for the test but then probably knock it off again before Sunday.

You'll have to point me to your tame MOT guy next year !

Cheers

Mark, it may be as easy to drill out the bolts and re tap the holes, that way you can wind them out for the MOT each year if needs be.
I would not recommend welding near the swivels.
5/4 of people admit that they’re bad with fractions.

My ex military 110 has never had a bonnet catch since the day it was made and nobody has ever questioned it at MoT time. You must have found the pickiest MoT man there is....

If you get to know your MOT man and he knows you do things right you get a lot more leeway on the stupider things in the test like "do you want me to put the lockstops in for the test when you know I'll take them out again as soon as I'm back at workshop because I need the lock for trialling" but you have to make sure other things are spot on ie brakes n pipes, solid vehicle , suspension and components in good order etc but it seems like you've found a bit of a jobsworth.
